Shape up your workplace
Did you know you will spend an average of 1/3 of your whole life at work? Scary! Therefore it is vital that your office space be kept as clean and healthy as possible. A wholesome office will improve your concentration and stress levels, sick days and productivity. Now, I don’t mean getting those cleaning gloves out when you should be managing the accounts, but there are some things you can do that will not only benefit yourself but your colleagues around you.
Keep your desk clean and tidy
As well as keeping it looking neat and tidy, your desk and everything on it needs to be free of germs and dust, everyday. Use wipes or spray in those 5 minutes before sign off, because you probably didn’t know that your computer mouse is, on average, three times dirtier than a toilet seat (you wouldn’t wipe your hands around a toilet seat and then dig into your sandwich would you).
Adopt a plant
Real ones will keep the air clean, help headaches (fresh O2), look good and few studies have even proven they reduce stress in the workplace! Just make sure to get a long lasting one so you don’t kill it within a week.
Keep it au naturel
No I’m not talking about wearing your birthday suit to work. I’m saying that if you can, get as much natural light streaming through as possible. The vitamin D is vital for your body and will reduce the glare of your computer’s bright light on your eyes (maybe try the app flux if this is an ongoing issue).
Move it or lose it
Sitting down all day is a big no no for your body. Australia’s Physical Activity Guidelines state that you should ‘minimise the amount of time spent in prolonged sitting’, due to complications such as muscle and weight problems. So in other words, why not try setting an alarm every hour to remind you to get up and go to the loo or get a drink and try to have more walking meetings or even invest in a standing desk!
This one sort of goes without saying, yet most people choose to ignore this tip, even though they know deep down that their 12-piece chicken nugget lunch will most likely, slowly kill them. Perhaps you could try asking the boss to order some healthier vending machine goodies? Please check out our previous blog post for tips on how to eat better at work, but if you don’t have time to do this, I have three words for you to remember my friend: FRUIT AND VEGETABLES. 60% of your body is made up of water, it is vital for metabolic functions and your skin. Try this tip: invest in a 1.5 litre bottle, fill it with water and add some fresh fruits or sugar free cordial to spruce it up a little.
Have a work-life balance in the office
Remember you do need time to do personal tasks during business hours, and it is important to your productivity levels to have frequent breaks and celebrate birthdays or lunch with friends etc – you are not a working robot!
If a standing desk isn’t an option in your office, and neither is an exercise ball chair – make sure to sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor, uncrossed legs and your elbows parallel to the desk.
Break it up
Ever been so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of work you need to do, and you just give up for 10 minutes? Well that’s actually a good thing to do. Frequent breaks not only allow you to get up and move, but will help your productivity and stress levels return to a manageable level when you do get back to doing the task at hand.
These (office) boots are made for walking
My colleague uses his hour break to do a 60-minute walk, which is a sure way to get his daily exercise in and one of the most productive breaks out there! He arrives back to work energised and sharper than before, so why not try adding in just half an hour of some sort of exercise during your break?
There you have it! There is plenty you can do yourself to strive for a healthier workplace and therefore a healthier you!
(A message for the boss: the all round healthy everyone is, the fewer sick days they will need. It is a win win situation).
